Coconut Craziness…

Lately I have gone crazy with anything coconut. I use coconut oil almost everyday on my scalp and occasionally DT with coconut milk. Even one of my fav gels ORS Lock and Twist Gel  has coconut milk in it.

Coconut oil has been a HG product for centuries especially in countries like India. If you google the benefits of coconut oil the results will seem endless.

Coconut oil contains lauric and capric acids which have antimicrobial properties (aka keeping icky bacteria of your scalp) and high amounts of vitamin E. Coconut oil also locks in moisture in hair. It’s not easily broken down and results in super soft and strong hair. It also prevents breakage which also important in retaining length. Check out this article of coconut oil and hair growth.

Coconut oil is great for avoiding and treating dry, itchy scalps and dandruff because of the fatty acids. Some even use it for styling alone or to tame frizz. I used it today under my leave in for a twist out (stay tuned for the details and results).

The uses for coconut oil are endless. I use it as a scalp and hair oil, pre-poo, and under deep conditioners. I plan to use it alone as a deep conditioner with my heat cap.

You can also mix it with other oils like brahmi, amla, rosemary, and lavender for an invigorating scalp massage. My current mix consists of coconut oil, lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, and peppermint oil.

Coconut oil is one of the only oils that penetrate the scalp and protects it. Coconut oil is also good for heat styling!

Well I can go on and on about the benefits of coconut oil…. but hold your horses there is more.

Now for the kicker….hold on to your seats…..COCONUT MILK!!!!!!

The benefits are pretty much the same and is one of the best products you can use to spice up your deep conditioner. I used it alone last week soaking my hair in it, covering with a plastic cap, a little heat, then co-washed it out in the morning.  I didn’t notice anything immediately besides softness and moisturized hair but when I did my wash and go the area of my area that need a ton of scrunch was curling on its one. When I co-washed today the area help a curl and clumped with no product.

This week for my DT I have coconut milk, GVP Conditioning Balm, and EVOO mixed together. Its been sitting in the fridge so if this TNC doesn’t work out I will be trying this combo out.

I have done a post before on a homemade DC made with Avocado and Coconut Milk. It’s great when you are on a budget because its only a few dollars.

Well all of this coconut ranting has me needing to do a  part 2. It’s so much I haven’t even gotten too like recipes and product recommendations, but in the meantime check out these links.

The Beauty Berry…

Also know as the acai berry (pronounced ah-sigh-ee).  It is said this miracle berry provides energy and endurance, weight controls, and beautiful hair, skin, and nails.

Now I was skeptical but almost everyone in the health food store I asked used it either as the pure juice, smoothies, bars, even a sorbet.

I did google it and there are a lot of scams out there saying this berry will make you lose weight and naming celebs like Oprah who actually doesn’t use it she just talked about it on the show. Most products online only have a small amount or an extract from the berry.

I got a free CD a bout the berry at Whole Foods and the store of the berry was quite interesting. The acai has been used in Brazil for thousands of years. It’s found in the rainforest and in time of  famine it helped people survive because of its high essential fatty acid, protein, and amino acids contents.

Some people are weary of fat but the good fat in this berry is the soucre so energy, helps in collagen production, and lubricates the body internally which is great for dry skin, hair, and nail. (This is what sold me.)

Well the new health pj in me had to give it a try. I really wanted something to boost my energy since I don’t drink coffee with the benefits for my weight and hair as extra bonuses.

The berry also has anti-aging properties because of the high levels of antioxidants which combats fatigue, mental confusion, cardiovascular function. Brazilians also claims it improves your outer beauty and sex drive.

One girl in the health food store has friends in Brazil and said they drink pure acai berry several times a day.

So purchased a 4oz bottle of the Genesis Today Acai 100 which as 30,000mg per serving. I took 2 tbs. in the morning but I’m not sure if it did anything. I do want to continue because I only used it twice but the large bottle is almost $40 dollars.

It didn’t taste too bad but is not all the great alone. It mixes well with juices though. I also tired the Naked Juice Acai Machince which was absolutely wonderful!

I plan to add the Acai 100 to my vita-cocktail reggie so I can do a full review on how it affects my energy and hair.

Have you ever tired any acai products? How did you like them and how have they worked for you?

My Vita Cocktail

If your body isn’t health then most likely neither is your hair. You may eatgood but sometimes your body does not absorb all the necessary nutrients. To ensure I have all the necessary nutrients for my body as well as a few others to promote hair growth. My Vitamin Cocktail is as follows:

  • 1 capsule of ReNew Life Adult Formula Probiotics (15 billion cultures) on an empty stomach

  • 1 tablet of Rainbow Light Women’s One Multi with my breakfast

  • 1 tablet of potassium 99mg (my multi has everything but potassium…kind of weird)
  • 1 capsule of fish oil 1000 mg
  • 2 tablets of Country Life Biotin 2000 mcg total

I am not a big fan of pills but having at least a good probiotic, mutli, and fish or flax oil (for omega 3s)  are essential to every person looking to live a long health live. I take 2 biotins to promote my hairs growth and strength. At one point I would take MSM but it caused me to breakout because I wasn’t drinking enough water at the time.

Do you have an allstar vita-cocktail? Feel free to share as well as what doesn’t work for your lifestyle. In the meantime keep those curls health!
